Royal: The Scarlet King

The sequel to my comic Royal: Three's a Company.

This time I have gone with a much more free flowing impressionistic approach, allowing the mood to come across more.  With the first instalment I got really sick of using reference all the time to get lighting right. This time I am using much less reference so I can work quicker and enjoy what I am doing.

This is the final art but the text probably will change as this is the first draft.

But here is a little teaser of what is to come.

The Offer

A quick painting that I did today.  Far from refined but I am making sure that from this day forward I am creating every day and then uploading it.

Happy New Year!

With a new year should come new things.  I take it upon myself regularly to go out of my comfort zone and try new styles of art.  I am happy with my work, but there is no harm in challenging yourself and pushing your limitations, everyone can improve.

I bought my best pal a manga art book and he bought a few too.  After lots of sketching and pages of ideas I thought it was time to do a full piece.

So here is a new picture in a new style, a happy combination of manga and my semi-photo-realistic digital impressionism.

Next Steps

So far I have been working solely on the face.  I am not sure how far I am going to take this but it is proving to be a good exercise in my patience and skill.

It is the first time I have worked on a picture with a break, normally I sit and work until it is done, even if it takes me most of a day.  however I feel in order to improve I must work in stints instead of one long stretch.

The start

 I started with the eye and thought I may as well carry on with the face.  Clearly I am working from photo reference - a pic of my close friend and confident Anna Harris, who also is over on Pages and Panels.

She has been going through a hard time lately so I thought I would do this for her.

The continued progress, last night and this morning.

An Experiment With Styles

I love my digital impressionism, but I also like experimenting with other styles. These two pieces are a mash up of a few of the styles that I often draw with.

Rest In Piece, Chibi

Mine and my girlfriend's hamster, Chibi, sadly passed away due to old age on Remembrance Day, 11th November. 

He spent the final few days of his life getting weaker and weaker, and finally tucked himself up in his favourite bedding to fall into a deep sleep in the evening. 

The most docile, friendly and loveable hamster I think we've ever had, he'll definitely be missed. As he was so well loved (our little bear!), I decided to draw him. I took a photograph of him on his favourite bedding whilst he was sleeping peacefully a few hours before he died, then used this as reference to draw this piece.

Rest in peace little guy!

Object Studies

Every so often I like to step away from the portraits or bigger pictures and try experimenting with light, shadows and colour on ordinary objects.

Here are my two latest examples, a glass of rum on the rocks, and a phone. 

Kimberlee B

This is for Kimberlee B, a client who requested a portrait of themselves. A huge lover of music, I decided to incorporate this into the picture.

The Nightmare: Album Artwork

A client requested that I draw some album artwork for his band, The Affliction Imperative's album, and I gladly accepted.

I listened to his song, The Nightmare, and then came up with this drawing, based on my feelings and the lyrics. 

It is the largest art piece I have worked on, and also the longest time I've worked on something, so I was glad that he was pleased with it!

Three Recent Commissions

I love working on commissions. Not only do they provide a challenge, and often see me working on pieces that I am not as familiar with, but I love seeing the reaction from those who have commissioned me.
